Synopsis: She is pretty and talented - sweet sixteen and never been kissed. He is seventeen; gorgeous and on the brink of a bright future. And now they have fallen in love. But... they are brother and sister.
Seventeen-year-old Lochan and sixteen-year-old Maya have always felt more like friends than siblings. Together they have stepped in for their alcoholic, wayward mother to take care of their three younger siblings. As defacto parents to the little ones, Lochan and Maya have had to grow up fast. And the stress of their lives—and the way they understand each other so completely—has also also brought them closer than two siblings would ordinarily be. So close, in fact, that they have fallen in love. Their clandestine romance quickly blooms into deep, desperate love. They know their relationship is wrong and cannot possibly continue. And yet, they cannot stop what feels so incredibly right. As the novel careens toward an explosive and shocking finale, only one thing is certain: a love this devastating has no happy ending.

My Rating | My ThoughtsI believe only once in a readers life will there be a book that you read, that will just utterly change your life, change how you see something, have a huge impact and just simply touch your heart in ways no other book has. Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma was that book for me. Going into this book I don't really know what I expected to come out of it as it discusses quite a tabo0 subject, but I definitely was not prepared mentally and emotionally for this story. I think the uniqueness of the storyline was what attracted me to read this book in the first place. This novel was truly a beautiful piece of literature. I absolutely loved how easy Tabitha constructed her main characters in such a way that you instantly felt a connection with them and just simply loved them. I know some people might judge Maya and Lochan's relationship and may bot be comfortable with that aspect of the story but I really don't care under the circumstances they where in I couldn't help but wish them together. They loved each other and I don't think anyone had the right to keep them from each other. But while saying that I by no means are saying that incest is okay, but what I am saying is that before you judge them you have to read the whole story and understand. I will not try to justify their love because no matter however I present it , it is a difficult concept to grasp. This may all sound disgusting but I never felt repulsed during the book, and I think this is what made it amazing. Lochan is the most selfless person I have ever met, he never puts himself first, always his family above all. Till his very last breath he made every single possible sacrifice he could to keep Maya and his family safe and together. I admired him so much and I literally fell in love with him. I only wish his end would have been better, he deserved so much more than he got. He deserved to be happy with Maya without the judgment of others. From the start Lochan had been given a life that I would describe as horrible, his father left, his mother might as well have left and only at the age of 12 he had to take on the responsibility of his family. He cooked and cleaned, payed the bills and never once did he complain. He did as much as he could with the life he had be given. I only wish he had a happy ending because he very much deserved it. I don't think I have ever cried and felt so utterly broken down by a characters death before. Through the last chapters and epilogue I was sobbing! Lochlans death just hit my heart, it was something I did not expect. I know I cried through the end of the book and wished happy endings for the characters but I am partly happy it didn't end in a way most books do. All problems resolved and they walk into the sunset, instead this book gave you an emotional, heartbreaking realistic ending. The thing I loved most about this book was the Whitely children and their little family they made. I loved how having no parents to look out for them didn't matter. They had each other and that was enough. Their love for each other was unbreakable. This book was about family, love and incest but it was about so much more. It was about how our society so easily judges another without knowing anything, the circumstances they are in and the issues they have to face. I so highly recommend this book to be read, this book has definitely changed my views on a number of things. I can say though this book isn't for someone that is not open minded. Overall I rate this novel a 5 out of 5 though I wish I could rate it a lot more then that. This book has become one of my favourite books of all times. |
