This is my second blog post from my new segment My Bookish Things Topic Discussion Week. Where I chose a book related topic and just share my thoughts and discuss it with you. As you can see from the title the topic is Reviewing books.
As a book blogger myself reviewing books is a big part of what I do. I enjoy reviewing books, it a form of reflecting and sharing your ideas with people of what you've read and your opinion on it. You might be wondering why I chose to talk about this particular topic, well I was in some way inspired to write about it. A few days ago I was on Goodreads, looking through books and reviews as you do. I came across this review on a particular book but it wasn't a review praising a book, It was a low review, meaning this person didn't quite like this book. She rated it a two out of five star rating and wrote her thoughts and opinions on why she felt that way. I thought that was perfectly reasonable, she wasn't hating on the book but stating what she disliked about it and her reasons why. Well I scrolled down to find a nasty comment written by the author of that particular book, saying quite unnecessary things. I couldn't believe that an author would write such a nasty comment on a readers honest opinion of a book.
As bloggers or readers in general I believe we have the right to share our honest opinions on the books we read. Not everyone is going to like a particular book. Every book is specifically aimed to a particular audience, every book is written in a different genre consisting of different stories and different characters. Therefore each book is going to be found appealing to some and not others, it's just how it is. I don't believe book bloggers should ever censor or delete a review because they think that it's too negative. Or overly praise a book because they don't want to upset the author.
I am by no means an author but I personally think its good to have both positive and negative reviews on something you have done, it will help you improve and learn. But at the same time there is definitely a line between completely hating on a book and giving constructive criticism. If you state your dissatisfaction and give reasoning behind it I think that it is perfectly reasonable.
So there you go, that is my opinion on this topic. Share your thoughts, I definitely am interested to know what everyone else thinks it.
