My rating | my thoughtsI can admit it was definitely the synopsis that gripped me in to wanting to read this book. The first thing I saw was vampires and masquerade and that alone instantly hooked me, like come on is that not the best combination ever! I definitely went into this book having a bit of expectations on what the story and characters were going to be like. On Goodreads I saw people give this book a five out of five star rating and saying that it was there favourite book of all time. But I am kind of disappointed because I didn't enjoy it as much I thought I was going to. Let me first start with the story line. The story was intriguing and I quite liked the concept and Sarah's whole take of the Lilith and Adam and Eve story. The back story of both Alec and Caleb I also enjoyed. Overall the story had so much potential I just felt the ending was a little to perfect and happily ever afterish. I know this is only the first book in the series and they may come another but I don't think that I will continue with this series. Next there is the characters. I had a real issue with connecting to the main character Nora. I could not stand her. For me she came across as needy, her lack of self control bothered me quite a bit. Alec or Caleb would just touch her and that was it, all control lost and she was this big mess . Her desire to continuously be involved in things that were beyond her annoyed me. Also her desire to continuously rip her clothes off and sleep with either Caleb or Alec bothered me. She seemed like a fairly intelligent person yet her actions where far from it. Then there's Alec and Caleb. I don't have any strong feeling towards them but I didn't entirely dislike them as characters either. I can say though I liked Caleb a lot more as we got to know him and see him a hell of a lot more than Alec. I feel my lack of connection to the main characters was due to their lack of character development. However despite my feeling towards the main character I quite liked Nora's professor. Before I continue I have to point this out. There was this scene in the book where Alec had just come back from looking for the professor. He came back and reunited with Nora. In that scene when Alec is with her she had the audacity to tell him that while he was gone nothing had changed. Are you serious!? She fell in love with his brother, slept with him, told him she loved him and then has the nerve to say nothing has changed when Alec is there! Come on Nora everything has changed. The biggest problem I had with this book was by far the amount of insta love and insta lust in this book. Within the first few seconds in meeting each other Nora and Alec are in love and can't stand being apart. Don't get me wrong I am a firm believer in love at first sight but this was just insane. And despite them being supposedly in love I never once felt chemistry or a real connection between them. I did although feel the connection between Caleb and Nora. But despite all of that it was an enjoyable read. I was turning each page eager to know what happens next. The thing I liked most about this book was that I didn't need to love the characters to love the story line. Because despite me not liking Nora I wanted to know the story between the brothers, how it happened in the first place, why Lilith did the things she did, why Alec hated Caleb and In the end how it was all going to end. The mythology in this book was definitely a highlight for me. So overall I rate this book a three out of five stars. |
